Hiking trails

Mijn Reisverhaal

The journey to Yoho National Park today takes us through Glacier National Park. That's a place that has been on our wishlist for a while, and the same ranger from Revelstoke recommended a beautiful hike for us. The Great Glacier Trail (moderate, 10km out and back, 430m elevation)😊 Along the location where the stately Glacier House used to stand, there is a trail from a parking lot all the way to a viewpoint overlooking the glaciers. Previously, that point was located directly at the foot of the glacier, but due to the melting of the glaciers, the distance has become greater. This is one of the causes that contributed to the downfall of the Glacier House. It's a shame because on photos on signs, the splendor of the nearly hundred years when the hotel could rival the most imposing and stately hotels on earth is remembered. For us, it doesn't matter, we have a beautiful trail to walk, and we do so laughing and chatting. Also, no wildlife today, other than the occasional squirrel. We don't see yesterday's marmot today either. What we do see is an impressive succession of landscapes. Where we start in a humid deciduous forest, we walk through low Alpine forest, to high Alpine and even tundra. We end up in a rugged rocky environment, surrounded by glaciers. On the way down, we walk a bit further to a crossing where two streams come together. A roar of water, and an ideal location to sit for a moment and take in the view. Once back at the RV, we still have a nice stretch ahead of us, where we drive deeper into the Rocky Mountains. 😄 The mountains get higher, more rugged, and we see more and more snow and ice on the peaks. The road (and the nearby railway) follow a meandering valley between the mountains to our campground for tonight in Yoho National Park, the Kicking Horse campground. 🏞️
