From dream to decision: how do you want to experience South Africa?
South Africa is a country you can explore in countless ways. That’s exactly what makes planning a trip so exciting, but also a bit overwhelming. Do you go for safari and nature, a relaxed coastal road trip, or a combination of everything? And do you plan everything yourself, or let someone help you?
During our travels, we experienced South Africa in different ways. We visited twice: once as a couple and once with family. In both cases, we chose to drive ourselves, which turned out to be surprisingly easy. At the same time, we booked our trips through a travel agency.
That gave us a lot of peace of mind during the planning process, as we received great support with routes, accommodations, and practical details—including emergency contacts along the way.
We like to travel well-prepared, so that once we arrive, we can simply enjoy the experience. And honestly, we love the planning phase just as much as the trip itself. During our journeys, we often chose smaller, boutique-style accommodations, combined with the occasional luxury lodge. That mix made the experience even more special for us.
A different route for every type of traveler
The type of trip that suits you best largely depends on what you value most. South Africa truly offers something for every kind of traveler.
If you prefer to have everything arranged for you, an organized tour or group trip can be a great option. You don’t have to worry about planning, and you’ll follow a set itinerary. This can be especially reassuring if it’s your first time visiting South Africa or if you’re unsure about organizing everything yourself.
On the other hand, South Africa is also an ideal destination for a self-drive road trip. The roads are generally in good condition and signage is clear, making it relatively easy to travel independently. This gives you the freedom to set your own pace and make spontaneous stops along the way.
For more adventurous travelers, there are camping trips that bring you closer to nature and often take you to unique, off-the-beaten-path locations. At the other end of the spectrum, you’ll find luxury trips with stunning lodges and hotels where everything is taken care of down to the smallest detail. The beauty of South Africa is that you can easily combine these styles, alternating a few back-to-basics nights with comfortable stays in special locations.
What do you want to get out of your trip?
Beyond how you travel, it’s important to think about what you truly want to experience.
For many people, wildlife is the main focus. In that case, a visit to the Kruger region or one of the private reserves is almost essential. Here, everything revolves around safari and spotting animals, often early in the morning or at the end of the day.
Others prefer a more balanced trip, combining the country’s highlights. Think of a mix of safari, the Garden Route, Cape Town, and the wine regions. This is a popular choice because it allows you to experience the country’s diversity.
We personally discovered that we enjoy a combination of nature, active experiences, and unique locations. Whether it’s a hike in the mountains, a safari among wildlife, or a viewpoint overlooking a dramatic canyon or waterfall, South Africa rarely disappoints.
At the same time, there’s plenty of room to relax and enjoy. For us, the wine region has become a fixed part of every trip. Spending an afternoon wine tasting, enjoying great food, and slowing down for a bit is the perfect balance.
Traveling with kids, friends, or as a couple
Who you travel with also plays a big role in shaping your trip. If you’re traveling with children, many people consciously choose malaria-free areas. Fortunately, South Africa has several regions where you can still see wildlife without entering a malaria zone. This makes it a much more accessible destination for families.
If you’re traveling with friends or as a couple, you often have more flexibility. You can cover longer distances more easily or choose a route with more variety. Cape Town, for example, is perfect if you enjoy a lively atmosphere, great restaurants, beaches, and a bit of buzz.
And if you’re looking for sunshine during the winter months, South Africa is an excellent choice. While it’s cold and grey in the Netherlands, you can enjoy warm days here. Just keep in mind that temperatures can rise significantly during the day, while evenings can be surprisingly cool.
Choose what suits you
Ultimately, there is no single “best” way to travel through South Africa. It all depends on your preferences, travel companions, and how much time you have.
We personally chose a combination of comfort, nature, and unique places, with plenty of room to be active and enjoy good food and a nice glass of wine. But maybe your focus is more on adventure, culture, or relaxation.
If you’re looking for more energy, festivals, and culture, cities like Cape Town and Durban are great places to spend more time. If you prefer peace and nature, more remote areas or mountain regions might be a better fit.
Whatever you choose, South Africa is a country that easily adapts to your way of traveling, and that’s exactly what makes it such an incredible destination.
In the next article, we’ll dive into an important practical question: will you explore South Africa by car, or choose domestic flights?
