Okay, we're going to travel around the west coast of Canada for 4 weeks with a camper, enjoying the most of visiting the National Parks. The next step is to plan a route. This may not seem so important with a camper, but many campgrounds must be reserved well in advance.
We start in Vancouver, where we book a hotel, and from this location, we can drive to the camper rental just outside the city. We initially plan to stay one night in Vancouver. However, we are advised to stay an extra night because the camper rental is closed on Monday due to a national holiday, Labor Day. Our end location will also be Vancouver, and we plan our route accordingly. In America, we experienced that flights to Europe often depart late in the evening, allowing us to return the campers in the morning and then drive to the airport without having to book a hotel.
We mark some highlights on the Travellust map that we definitely want to visit - for us, these are Banff NP, Jasper NP, and Vancouver Island. Additionally, we have a wishlist of locations we'd like to visit if we pass by them, such as Revelstoke NP, Glacier NP, and Wells Gray PP. We decided in advance that we would like to spend a week on Vancouver Island. This can be done by driving back to Vancouver via Whistler and taking the ferry to the island or by taking the ferry to the most northern point of Vancouver Island through the Inside Passage. This takes some extra time, but it allows us to see a larger part of Canada and a less touristy part.
This is something that appeals to us and fits within our 4-week schedule. We have found that we don't mind driving in the morning and enjoying a beautiful hike in the afternoon or making one while driving. We also like not having to drive long distances every day and staying multiple nights in some places. This way, we have more time to explore the surroundings and enjoy the campground.
Once we have plotted the route with the locations we want to see, ensuring travel times meet our wishes, we choose which locations we want to stay for extra nights until we reach our 4-week total. Satisfied, we book the accommodations based on our chosen route.
