You can go about booking campgrounds in two ways: you can book all campgrounds in advance or go on a whim. By not booking anything, you can decide how to divide your 4 weeks once you're in Canada. If you find a place you like, you can stay longer, and you have no schedule to adhere to. This gives a lot of freedom during the trip and also requires less effort in preparation.
During our trip to America, we enjoyed the campgrounds in the National Parks the most, staying behind when all tourists leave the park to go back to their hotels, and you stay with your camper amid nature, under the brightest starry skies, and surrounded by wildlife. We hope to do this as much as possible on this trip. For this reason, we book all our campgrounds in advance. We find out which campgrounds are in the National Parks and which ones are commercial. Only campgrounds in National Parks need to be booked well in advance.
For America, we were advised that this should be booked precisely a half year in advance on the day, digitally through various websites. For Canada, it's similar but slightly different. All National Parks are booked through the same website, but this website opens about half a year in advance for the entire season for each National Park. To secure a spot on these campgrounds, you have to be ready to reserve the camping spot at a specific time - for us, in March. We do this for all campgrounds, despite it being half a year in advance and never at a convenient time.
At most campgrounds, you can choose the specific camping spot besides the campground itself. This provides a lot of fun anticipation long before you go on your trip. Once all National Parks are booked, we also book the rest of the campgrounds in the following months. We already have a schedule to adhere to, so we might as well figure it out in advance. This way, the campground spots are mostly paid for by credit card before we leave, spreading the costs more evenly over the year.
